We went to Children's Hospital in Seattle and learned that Alaina will need surgery @ 9-12 months to correct the cleft in her palate. They will sew it back together, and that should fix speech issues, swallowing issues, etc. They will also put small drainage tubes in her ears to help get rid of the fluid in there since she's missing that flap of skin that blocks things going up her nose & in her ear canal when she swallows. I was also directed to bottle feed instead of breast feed because she can't latch correctly due to the cleft & so she's putting out more energy than she's taking in & losing weight fast. I guess in 3rd world countries a lot of babies with clefts become dehydrated & malnourished and eventually die because they can't take in what they need. Alaina has to gain 1 lb in a week or she'll need to go back to Children's. And to add to the fun - my milk is drying up (I'm wondering now if it's due to stress), but I'm so grateful we live where we do & when we do so Alaina can get all she needs to thrive! Thank you Dr's, friends, & formula!!!

I am so sorry to hear about the hard times with the new little one. You will be in our prayers. I am just glad to know there are solutions for the problem until she can have surgery. Sweet little kids you have...very cute!
Hi Alita! Your family is beautiful! We are expecting our first (a girl) in October. So glad to see you are doing great!
